Photofacial is the generic term for skin treatment that uses a light-based technology. Also called foto facial, this type of treatment is often used to boost collagen or treat a variety of skin conditions including acne, pigment problems, rosacea, eye bags, large pores, age spots and premature wrinkles.

Types of Photofacials

There are two different types of technology used for photofacials, and it is important to know which technology is being used to get the desired results.

LED (Light Emitting Diode): An LED photofacial is used to boost collagen for plumper, young-looking skin. It can also be used to kill bacteria that cause acne. An LED photofacial is painless and relaxing. It is often done in a day spa for aesthetic purposes. You can achieve the best results after a number of treatments.
LED therapy can dramatically improve your skin’s appearance. It is ideally used in combination with other anti-aging skincare treatments such as microdermabrasion or non-aggressive chemical peel treatments.

IPL (Intense-Pulsed Light): IPL treatment is called a photofacial by some medical spas. An IPL photo facial is often used to treat a number of skin conditions including rosacea, facial redness, brown spots, broken capillaries, and the like. A hand-held device is used to deliver a blast of high-energy light to the affected area. IPL treatments can be painful and may cause mild burns.

How Long Does A Photofacial Take?

A photofacial can take 30 to 45 minutes. Best results are achieved with 4 to 6 sessions spaced 3 weeks apart, depending on the treatment.

What Are The Side Effects Of Photofacials?

LED photofacial is one of the quickest and safest ways to achieve young-looking skin. No side effects have been reported with LED treatment.
IPL photofacials, however, have a number of side effects including temporary redness and swelling. Temporary bruising and blistering may also occur.

Advantages and Disadvantages

One of the advantages of IPL photofacial is that it does not damage the skin surface. Thus, there is virtually no recovery time. Patients can return to work the same day. The pain is minimal and goes away after the treatment. Another advantage is that a larger area can be treated at one time, compared to laser treatment. The biggest drawback is that several treatments are required to see the desired results. Side effects include temporary redness and increased or decreased pigmentation in the treated area.

Other Names for Photofacial

Photofacial is also known as Fotofacial, Photo Facial, Fotofacial Rejuvenation, Photo Rejuvenation, IPL, and Photorejuvenation.
